Francie Maupin has been sketching fashions since her preteen years so it was only a matter of time before she put together a line of her own. She introduces The Diva Kurves Collection by premiering, Swim Thick, a line of swimsuits geared toward curvy women. In a market where the bar for plus sized swimwear has been dramatically raised by Monif C, Nakki Muli, and Cacique, Swim Thick is pushing its way into the mix to make sure all the curvy ladies are covered, literally. Swim Thick will cover standard sizes but will also offer options for ladies with bottom heavy proportions so that they will be able to find swimsuits that fit their curves just right. The extra focus on the ladies with extra curves definitely sets Swim Thick apart from other plus size swimwear.
We dig in deeper about Miss Maupin and the release of Swim Thick:
How did you start? What triggered you to start a swim line?
It seemed like every time I would enter a store or boutique and ask, "where are the plus sizes located," I would get pointed to the direction of this small space that 99% of the time consisted of a bunch of clothing that was not appealing at all.
I am small on top and heavy on the bottom so when I did find a store with attractive plus clothing, the clothes never really fit my body. I found myself having to get them tailored which never really turned out how I envisioned and tailoring gets expensive.
Do you see swim thick expanding? To what?
I guess Lavish Access is the first to know that The Diva Kurves Collection will not consist of just swimsuit pieces. Swim Thick is just the premiere line to the Diva Kurves Collection which currently has a fall line in production! Also, a big announcement for the brand will be released at the end of September so stay tuned!
Who is your favorite designer?
My top favorites right now are Monif C. and Lavender’s Jungle
Who do you look up to in the industry?
I truly admire Lakrisha Joseph-Baker, the Ceo of Lavender’s Jungle, her positive attitude and passion to uplift other women is very inspirational. Ming lee, Ceo of Snob Life, also inspires me to be great and stay focused on my vision. She is around my age and because of her drive and dedication, her brand is huge and very successful.
What do you say to people who think thick/plus women shouldn't wear two pieces?
Why not?! If God wanted every woman in the world to be built the same he would have created us that way. And if everyone all looked the same, imagine how boring life would be. Show off YOUR curves that were designed specifically for you. That’s the beauty of being you. Confidence is everything. Own it!
