In one week, on September 13, 2014, SCAR (Sickle Cell Awareness Ride) will hold it's 3rd Annual Ride across Atlanta, Ga. We will have over 20 Motorcycle Cubs joining us this year and we are pumped!! This is the most participation we have had, since we began. The ride will end at Metro Fun Center where we will offer free Sickle Cell screening, bowling, music, food and fun!!

1. Sickle cell disease is caused by abnormal hemoglobin in the red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a protein found in the red blood cells that carry oxygen to your body.
2. You get Sickle cell disease if BOTH your parents pass the sickle cell trait down to you. Children whose parents both have the sickle cell trait have a 1 in 4 chance of having sickle cell disease.
3. Sickle cell anemia is the most common form of Sickle cell disease.
4. Normal red blood cells are disc-shaped and look like doughnuts without holes in the center. Sickle cells develop a sickle or crescent shape.
5. Children as young as 4 months begin experiencing symptoms.
6. A blood test can check If you Have the Sickle cell trait or disease.
7. Patients with Sickle cell anemia have painful episodes (called crises), which can last from hours to days to weeks. A crisis is when the sickle cells lodge in a joint, tissue, bone or organ and cause swelling and excruciating pain.
8. In the past, sickle cell patients often died from organ failure between ages 20 and 40. Thanks to a better understanding and management of the disease, today, patients can live into their 50s or beyond.
9. Sickle cell is the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States, and
affects millions of people worldwide.
10. More than 80,000 Americans are affected by Sickle cell disease, and a significant number of those affected are African-American children.
